CHILCA
Inaugurated on September 15, 2023, in the presence of the Peruvian Minister of Energy, the Chilca BESS is the largest energy storage system in Peru to date. It is co-located with the 852 MW Chilca Uno thermoelectric power plant, owned by Engie Energía Perú.
Through the successful delivery of the project, NHOA Energy demonstrated its System Integrator capabilities by combining its proprietary control system PROPHET with selected tier 1 LFP battery and PCS manufacturers. NHOA Energy also showcased its EPC delivery model by delivering a fully performing system in an industrial area with a high salinity atmosphere and safely connecting it to the existing power plant.

NHOA also showcased its EPC delivery model by delivering a fully performing system in an industrial area with a high salinity atmosphere and safely connecting it to the existing power plant.
The BESS exempts the existing power plant from providing the primary frequency regulation service: a compulsory, constant, unremunerated service mandatory for all generation units above 10 MW connected to the Peruvian grid. This has re-enabled an additional 50 MW of efficient power capacity of Chilca Uno Power Plant, previously reserved for the service, for market use, thus increasing plant revenues from energy sales.
Moreover, by providing peak shaving services, the BESS helps the Client avoid additional costs associated with grid imbalances or increased fuel costs. Unlike a conventional power plant, BESS technology excels at this task due to its much faster and more precise response to grid operator’s setpoints. This not only strengthens the grid and allows for increased renewable energy integration, but also reduces the risk of penalties for service failures, generating a second economic benefit for the customer.
